Fuck Buttons "Street Horrsing" (ATP)
To somebody reared on breakbeats, an act like Fuck Buttons seems conspicuously geared toward rejiggering the sounds that can move a large, dumb, happy crowd. Everything about "Street Horrsing" strives for an embrace, a nod of recognition or a hand waving in the air. But forget about, y'know, the groove: This is big-room noise with its cock tucked between its legs, the drugs set to "stun," the vocals flirting with screamo, and the 808s and 909s marginalized like tobacco products. Which is another way of saying that I desperately want a very-warm-jets song like "Race You To The Bedroom - Spirit Rise" to explode with some sort of unexpectedly awesome emphasis. It ain't gonna happen there or anywhere, I tell ya: "Bright Tomorrow" has a beat & a surge, and "Colours Move" gets all safari & shit, but both tracks are ultimately less than propulsive. I might as well break out that latest Animal Collective album, which feels equally limited, but nonetheless makes honest attempts to spark a few wildfires. This U.K. duo, these Fuck Buttons, they sell the drone, and they sell it hard, hard, hard.
"Street Horrsing" will be released March 18 on ATP Recordings, an arm of the All Tomorrows Parties Festival.
Fuck Buttons play March 30 at the Rock & Roll Hotel.
