Having the Congressman whack the Senator seemed a bit over the top. I mean, what if the dude didn't want to go kayacking that day? Or what if he were packing? My BSometer was pinging rapidly.

And this could never happen now with imbedded reporters...

Oh, yeah, that flick was as preposterous as one of the wilder episodes of "24," but it was Kubrickian enough to make me suspend disbelief for awhile. My brain didn't treat it as a Tom Clancy thriller.

Have you seen the Sinatra/Lansbury original? Now that's a great flick.

Saw the 1962 original years ago. I don't recall a lot of details about it, but I do remember that it was very good. Gotta rent that one again soon.

Fun fact: Angela Lansbury played the mother of Laurence Harvey's character, even though she was only three years older than him.
