As a lifelong Phils fan, a huge portion of Yankees lore sickens me, but I'll be honest about Billy Crystal's HBO flick "61*" -- it was more satisfying and not nearly as cloying or sentimental as might've been expected. Crystal let the guys say "fuck" and "shit" a lot, and although there was an excess of shots in reverent slo-mo, his take on the M&M Boys seemed authentic enough. Barry Pepper -- best known as the stoic U.S. sniper in "Saving Private Ryan" -- looked a little light in the biceps to be Maris, but everything else about his brush-cut performance was spooky. The on-field stuff also was primo: How many people, besides the Bronx knuckleheads who rush past the horse-cops during triumphant Octobers, know what it's like to look up into the right-field stands at Yankee Stadium? The credits had a neat surprise, too. It wasn't Yankee Stadium at all. Crystal used the retired Tiger Stadium as his tableau. F the Yankees.
